8/8/11 – Hall of Fame

Label me the cynic of the year. Make that decade. What the hell? Cynic of the Century sounds okay.

Last Saturday as I watched the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speeches of Deion Sanders and Shannon Sharpe I thought I was listening to a couple actors auditioning for a dramatic role. Talk about over the top.

I can only imagine how special it is to be induced into a hall of fame. I’m 0-for-life in that category. And I don’t mind a few touching stories of how others sacrificed to help make dreams come true for Sanders and Sharpe. But the low, whispering voices . . . the manufactured tears . . . the dramatic pauses . . . on and on they went in what came across a self-serving promotion.

Both were great players. Both deserve being in the hall of fame.

Now I’m looking forward to seeing them on the silver screen in the remake of some Hollywood classic.

Not really.
