I often ranted about how can athletes be so stupid when it comes to constantly getting into trouble in the real world. I’m amazed they don’t seem to get it: The best way to avoid trouble is the stay away from where trouble happens. And it is no secret that most problems with the law, with booze and with overly aggressive fans trying to impress their friends happen after midnight.

It should be pointed out to those who say the problem is “the young being young” that pro teams and major college athletic program provide their athletes with aggressive support programs. Life counselors, financial advisors and police officers are constantly available to educate the athletes. Example after example of how to avoid problems are provided.

I bring this up now because last week I realized how naïve I am. LeBron James’ mother was arrested for simple assault for striking a parking valet at a Miami Beach hotel. According to the story, the valet didn’t get her car fast enough. The incident happened at 4:37 a.m.

That’s 4:37 a.m.

Alas, the problem is like parent, like child.
