8/9/11 – Steve Williams

Did you see the chip Steve Williams made on the 13th hole at Firestone in the World Golf Championship? How about the long putt on 14 Williams made on 14 to all but seal the victory? And what a finish! Stevie nailed that 6-iron from more than 200 yards on the final hole. Almost made an eagle 2!

Wait a minute. Williams wasn’t hitting those shots. Adam Scott was. Stevie was toting the bags, reading his yardage book and, no doubt, offering words of encouragement. That’s what caddies do.

Shame on the media for putting the spotlight on the caddie and not Scott, who is emerging as a top 10 player in the world and one of the favorites for this week’s PGA Championship.

Williams’ story is interesting, of course. He was fired by Tiger Woods after more than a decade, 13 majors and dozens of world wide victories. To carry the winning bag in Tiger’s return from injury was note worthy. Give Williams an attaboy. Celebrate Tiger’s continued struggles.

But the credit and glory belong to Scott. End of story.
