8/1/11 – Justin Verlander

I’m confused – which doesn’t surprise most people who know me.

Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander was upset when Erick Aybar tried to bunt leading off the eighth inning. Verlander was working on a no-hitter with the Tigers leading the Angels 3-0. The Detroit ace tossed out the term “bush league” when asked about Aybar’ bunt. Something about you don’t bunt when a pitcher is working on a no-hitter.

Apparently it’s one of those unwritten rules, according to Verlander, who has been Major League Baseball’s best pitcher this season.

What about trying to win a game? A 3-0 deficit certainly isn’t insurmountable. Aybar eventually scored on the Angels’ only hit off Verlander. Maybe someone should actually write down all of these so-called unwritten rules.

Better yet, maybe Verlander should shut up.
