7/22/11 – Preseason Polls

Preseason poll are, as a rule, ridiculous. The poll taken at the SEC Media Days tops the list, making ridiculous sounds like too nice a word.

Several 100 so-called media types attend the three-day session in Hoover, Ala., outside of Birmingham. There are certainly many outstanding media reps from throughout the nation on hand to grill the head coaches and top players. But they are far outnumbered by media cheerleaders, many of whom don’t even work as reporters or commentators. They come from every crossroads in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia. They wear their school colors and toss out the word “we” as if they are on the coaching staffs. They love their college football and attend so they can rub elbows with their heroes.

I’m sure most of good, hard-working people, but to give their opinions any validity would be foolish.

So if your team didn’t get much respect in the preseason poll and all-SEC teams don’t worry. Consider the source.
