7/20/11 – Love Them Pirates

What’s the big surprise about the Pittsburgh Pirates having a winning record and battling for the lead in the NL Central Division? They do such a crazy thing about every 10 to 20 years.

It was only 19 years ago the Pirates ended a three-year run as the division’s top team. And 22 years prior to that year the Bucs started a wonderful run that lasted throughout the 1970s. And who can forget the 1960 Pirates, who beat the Yankees in seven games in the World Series? That was the year of the Bill Mazeroski home run in the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 to give Pittsburgh a 10-9 victory and the title. It ranks as the all-time greatest home run in baseball history . . . and, yes, I remember Bobby Thomson’s “home run heard around the world” to give the Giants the 1951 NL pennant.

Admittedly I’m being a bit sarcastic here to make the point that few fans suffer as much as Pirates fans. Unlike Cubs fans or, say, Vanderbilt football fans who never get the celebrate championships, the Pirates tease their fans about once every generation and then go back to their losing ways.
