5/10/11 – NBA Redemption

The timing was perfect for the NBA, which needed a boost after Sunday’s Dallas-Los Angeles fiasco when the Lakers turned into no-class thugs. Monday night’s playoff games were great theater, the Heat needing overtime to dispatch the Celtics and the Thunder needing three OTs to beat the Grizzles.

The Lakers’ Sunday loss certainly chased away some viewers, but those who tuned in to the NBA’s Monday games were treated to a night with two overtime games for the first time in 16 years. Neither game was perfectly played but the competition couldn’t have been more thrilling. Miami’s Big 3 lived up to their hype and have the aging-before-our-eyes Celtics on the brink of elimination. Boston, though, went down fighting.

Meanwhile, the NBA’s two upstart powers, Oklahoma City and Memphis, revealed a promising future for the Association. Big shots, hustle, individual stars all were on display in the Thunder’s victory.

The NBA needed such a night to help erase the Lakers’ fall from grace.
