Porn or Art?

In my opinion . . .

  • ESPN Magazine’s current “Body Issue” is about celebrating the athletic body as much as Sports Illustrated’s “Swimsuit Issue” is about swimsuits.  NOT! I wouldn’t so far as to call it pornography but its close. It is certainly sensationalism targeted at teenage boys and men who are embarrassed to buy “Playboy” and magazines of its ilk. By the way, the Jaguars’ Maurice Jones-Drew appears naked in the issue . . .
  • The Paterno family says it will do its own investigation of the late Joe Paterno’s role in the disgusting Jerry Sandusky story. The family thinks the official Penn State report unfairly portrayed the role of the school’s long-time and beloved football coach. Why do I think the report will never see the light of day – just as O.J. Simpson’s quest to “find the real killers” of his wife and her boyfriend quietly disappeared? For the record, I think Paterno’s statue in front of stadium should come down  . . .
  • If you ran the Jaguars why would you have signed placekicker Josh Scobee any earlier than you had to – which was Monday before 4 p.m.? Think about it. You had Scobee locked up for at least the 2012 season under the franchise tag. If you sign him early and then something happens to him – he injures himself in a car accident, gets hit by a falling rock or has a run-in with the law – you’ve got a mess on your hands. You could find yourself having to eat a signing bonus. It was good business to wait. And players remind us all the time that the NFL is a big business . . .
  • Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has written a book about, in part, how he originally lied about his involvement in dog fighting. Vick says he lied because he thought he could get away with it and keep his NFL career on target. Now he’s being honest, in part, to set the record straight and prove he is truly rehabilitated. Mmmmmmm . . . would he lie to sell books? Yes, I am a Class A cynic . . .
  • Now that Jeremy Lin has moved on from New York to Houston, Linsanity will die quicker than leisure suits. It was a wonderful story NBA story for about a month, but Lin is, at best, an average NBA point guard . . .
  • Few organizations do a better job of hiding their dirty laundry than the PGA Tour. There’s often more to the published stories about why players miss several months of play than their so-called injuries. The Tour has its share of players who violate the drug policy . . .
  • And, yes, I sorta agree with Kobe Bryant. The current Olympic basketball team would give the Dream Team a helluva game . . .
